Saddle height is the most important adjustment on a bike. A saddle that's too high or too low is the most common cause of knee pain from cycling, costs you power, and leads to a rocking pelvis. Here are the three common methods — from the quick rule of thumb to the most precise measurement.
Measure your inseam: stand barefoot with your back against a wall, pull a book up horizontally into your crotch, and measure the distance from the top of the book to the floor. Then apply:
Example: inseam 86 cm → saddle height ≈ 75.9 cm. The formula gives a good starting point but ignores individual factors like crank length, shoe-pedal stack and pedalling style.
Sit on the bike (steady yourself against a doorframe), place your heel on the pedal at its lowest point. Your leg should be straight, without your pelvis rocking. Switching to the ball of your foot then gives you the right slight knee bend automatically. Quick, but imprecise — foot length and footwear distort the result.
Professionals set saddle height using the knee angle at bottom dead centre. Target range:

Rule of thumb for correction: approx. 2.5° of knee angle per 1 cm of saddle height.
