Your frame size sets the rough frame — the fine-tuning happens in the cockpit: handlebar height (spacers/headset) and stem length determine back angle, comfort and aerodynamics. Set up wrong, they're a common cause of back pain, neck tension and numb hands.
The "drop" is the height difference between the top of the saddle and the top of the handlebar. It determines how flat your back angle becomes:

More drop means more aerodynamics, but also more demand on core strength and hip mobility. Increase drop gradually by swapping spacers — never in one big jump.
A simple test in riding position on the hoods (hands up top, looking down): the handlebar should just cover the front hub. Elbows should be slightly bent (about 15–20°), never fully extended.
Common stem lengths range from 80 to 120 mm — fine-tune in 10 mm steps, combined with the reach of your frame size.
Instead of adjusting purely by feel, the back angle (angle between pelvis, shoulder and horizontal) can be measured objectively:

Cockpit adjustments can compensate for small deviations in frame size — a slightly shorter or longer stem makes up for a frame that falls right between two sizes. But they can't fix a fundamentally wrong frame choice: if the frame's reach is significantly too long or too short, stem adjustment quickly hits its limits (stems under 70 mm or over 130 mm are considered a compromise fix).
