Back Pain from Cycling: Causes & Solutions by Pain Location

After knee pain, an aching back is the second most common complaint on the bike. Here too, the cause is rarely the back itself — almost always it's the riding position, especially the interplay between saddle height, saddle tilt and cockpit (handlebar height & stem length). The location of the pain narrows the cause down considerably.

⚕️ For pain radiating into the leg, numbness/tingling, or persistent symptoms (longer than 2 weeks): get it checked medically first, then optimise the bike.

The most common setup mistakes

  1. Reach too long: the torso is stretched too flat, and the lumbar spine can no longer absorb the load — the classic cause of lower back pain.
  2. Saddle too high: to still reach the pedal at bottom dead centre, the pelvis rocks with every revolution — that rocking transfers straight into the spine.
  3. Handlebar too low: too much drop without sufficient core and hip mobility forces overextension of the neck.
  4. Weak core muscles: without stabilising abdominal and back muscles, the passive spine takes on holding work the muscles should be doing — most noticeable on long rides.

Fix the setup, train the core

Riding position is the lever with the biggest effect — but it's no substitute for core stability. Two to three short core sessions per week (plank, bird dog, side plank) noticeably reduce the load on the spine and make your position more tolerant on long rides.
